Solid Waste Management in Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement, Kenya. A Scoping Study

This report offers a deep dive into the state of solid waste management in Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Settlement—two of Kenya’s largest refugee-hosting areas. Commissioned by Last Mile Climate and developed by WASTE, it exposes critical gaps in infrastructure, data, and coordination, while highlighting the environmental and health risks of unmanaged waste. Despite these challenges, the report reveals real potential: from local recycling initiatives to private sector involvement and innovative funding mechanisms. With coordinated action, these communities can transition toward a more sustainable and inclusive waste management system that drives both environmental and economic resilience.
